Seratec AmylasePaper enables rapid, sensitive localisation of latent saliva stains across large surface areas — fabric, clothing, bedding, upholstery, and other forensic substrates — without the need to destructively sample the item first. The filter paper is impregnated with a starch-iodine reagent system that reacts with salivary alpha-amylase activity to produce a visible colour change at the site of saliva deposition.

How to Use AmylasePaper
AmylasePaper follows a straightforward contact-transfer workflow compatible with routine forensic evidence examination procedures.
Exhibit Receipt & Documentation
Receive and log the forensic exhibit per laboratory chain-of-custody procedures. Document the item condition and identify the area or areas of interest to be screened for saliva.
Paper Preparation
Prepare the AmylasePaper by moistening it with the supplied Potassium Iodide stock solution as specified in the Instructions for Use. Ensure even and adequate moistening of the paper surface prior to contact with the exhibit.
Contact Application to Exhibit
Place the moistened AmylasePaper directly onto the surface of the exhibit. Apply even pressure across the paper to ensure consistent contact between the paper and the substrate being screened.
Enzymatic Reaction
Salivary alpha-amylase present in the stain transfers to the paper and hydrolyses the starch in the reagent system. This disrupts the starch-iodine complex and produces a visible clearing or colour change at the site of amylase activity within approximately 10 minutes.
Result Interpretation & Area Marking
Identify areas of clearing or colour change on the paper as indicative of amylase activity. These areas correspond to regions of potential saliva deposition on the exhibit. Mark or photograph the exhibit to document areas of interest for targeted follow-up sampling.
