The Role of Body Fluid Identification in Forensic Investigation

Accurate identification of biological evidence at crime scenes is a critical step in forensic investigation. Body fluid identification — including blood, saliva, semen, and menstrual blood — establishes the nature of biological material before DNA analysis, providing context for forensic interpretation.

What are RSID Tests?

RSID (Rapid Stain Identification) tests are immunochromatographic lateral flow assays developed by Seratec GmbH (Germany) for the presumptive and confirmatory identification of human body fluids. Each assay is highly specific to its target fluid, minimising cross-reactivity with animal sources or other biological materials.

Available RSID Assays

  • RSID Blood — Detection of human blood including dried bloodstains
  • RSID Saliva — Detection of human saliva via amylase
  • RSID Semen — Detection of human semen
  • RSID Menstrual Blood — Differentiation of menstrual from peripheral blood
  • RSID Urine — Detection of human urine

BlueStar Forensic — Chemiluminescent Blood Detection

BlueStar Forensic is a chemiluminescent reagent used for the visualisation of latent bloodstains that are invisible to the naked eye. It reacts with the haem component of haemoglobin to produce a bright blue luminescence, enabling detection of trace bloodstains that have been cleaned or diluted.
