Product Overview

RMIC — Resistance Mechanism Characterisation

The RMIC strip is BioMaxima's resistance-focused gradient diffusion MIC test strip for quantitative determination of minimum inhibitory concentrations for resistance mechanism confirmation. The panel is pre-configured for the key antimicrobial agents required to characterise ESBL, AmpC, carbapenemase-producing organisms (KPC, OXA-48, NDM, VIM, IMP), MRSA, VRE, and colistin resistance.

Like all BioMaxima MIC strips, RMIC uses the patented biomedical composite carrier technology developed with Arctic Paper Kostrzyn S.A. — ensuring precise, reproducible antibiotic diffusion across 15 two-fold dilution steps. Results are directly comparable with EUCAST broth microdilution reference MIC values and support accurate clinical breakpoint application for AMR reporting and infection control.

RMIC strips are placed on Mueller-Hinton agar inoculated with the test organism. After 16–20 hours incubation at 35 ± 1°C, the MIC is read directly where the bottom of the ellipse intersects the graduated scale. No serial dilution preparation is required.

Results are interpreted using the current annual EUCAST Clinical Breakpoint Tables or CLSI M100, classifying isolates as S, I, or R. For carbapenem-resistant organisms, apply the most current EUCAST guidance and local antimicrobial stewardship protocols.

Patented Technology

Why BioMaxima RMIC Strips

Developed through university research partnerships and a patented composite substrate — delivering consistent, reproducible gradient diffusion AST.

Patented

Biomedical Composite Carrier

RMIC strips use BioMaxima's patented biomedical composite carrier layer — delivering precise, consistent antibiotic diffusion across all 15 two-fold dilution steps with exceptional lot-to-lot reproducibility. Critical for resistance work where exact MIC thresholds determine clinical and public health decisions.

Research-backed

University-Validated Technology

The MIC test platform was developed through a five-year research programme (2017–2022) in collaboration with UMCS Lublin (Departments of Genetics and Microbiology, and Biochemistry) and the Medical University of Lublin — with two patent applications filed as a result.

Standards

EUCAST & CLSI Aligned

RMIC resistance agent gradients are validated against EUCAST and CLSI reference MIC distributions, ensuring interpretive agreement for key species/agent combinations used in Australian AMR surveillance and CPE reporting.

Efficiency

No Serial Dilution Required

Unlike broth microdilution, RMIC strips require no preparation of antibiotic dilution series. A single strip on an inoculated agar plate delivers the full 15-step gradient — reducing preparation time and minimising dilution error in resistance confirmation workflows.

Versatile

Standard Laboratory Infrastructure

RMIC testing requires only standard microbiology laboratory equipment — incubator, agar plates, and a turbidity standard. Results in 16–20 hours using standard overnight incubation. Compatible with existing MIC strip applicators and workflows.

Stewardship

CPE Confirmation Workflow

Supports confirmatory carbapenem MIC determination following screening tests (e.g. CarbaNP, chromogenic agar), providing quantitative data required for clinical decision-making, public health reporting, and infection control protocols.
