BlueStar®
Forensic
The world standard in luminol-based blood detection
BlueStar Forensic is the leading chemiluminescent reagent for latent bloodstain detection at crime scenes — revealing blood traces invisible to the naked eye, including degraded, washed, and aged stains, without compromising DNA evidence integrity.
How BlueStar Works
BlueStar is a luminol-based chemiluminescent reagent. When applied to a surface containing trace amounts of blood, the luminol reacts with the iron in haemoglobin through a catalytic oxidation reaction — producing a distinctive blue chemiluminescent glow visible in low-light conditions.
Unlike older luminol formulations, BlueStar is specifically engineered to minimise DNA degradation. The reaction does not denature DNA to the extent that standard luminol reagents can — making BlueStar the preferred choice for forensic casework where subsequent DNA profiling is required.
BlueStar detects blood at extremely low concentrations — even after attempts to clean the scene. It reacts with latent bloodstains that have been washed, bleached, painted over, or subjected to environmental weathering — making it invaluable for cold case investigations and crime scene reconstruction.
Available in both ready-to-use liquid form and convenient tablet form for field use, BlueStar is used by forensic laboratories, crime scene investigators, and law enforcement agencies worldwide.

Why Forensic Laboratories Choose BlueStar
BlueStar is formulated specifically for forensic casework — where sensitivity, DNA compatibility, and field practicality are all critical requirements.
Specifically formulated to minimise DNA degradation. BlueStar allows subsequent DNA profiling from treated samples — critical for forensic investigations where genetic evidence is required.
Detects blood at extremely low concentrations — reacting with trace quantities invisible to the naked eye. Effective on surfaces where blood has been diluted, degraded, aged, or partially destroyed.
Detects bloodstains that have been washed, bleached, painted over, or subjected to cleaning attempts. Invaluable for crime scene reconstruction and investigations where evidence concealment is suspected.
Available in convenient tablet form — dissolve in water at the crime scene. No hazardous pre-mixed solution transport. Practical and safe for use in the field by crime scene officers.
Ready-to-use liquid formulation for immediate application. Supplied in spray bottles for convenient, controlled application across large surface areas at crime scenes.
Effective on aged bloodstains from historical crime scenes. The chemiluminescent reaction remains effective even on years-old bloodstain evidence — supporting reinvestigation of unsolved cases.
BlueStar Products
BlueStar Forensic is available in two formulations — both delivering the same high-sensitivity chemiluminescent blood detection performance.
Convenient tablet formulation for field use. Dissolve in water at the crime scene to prepare the reagent on-site — eliminating the need to transport pre-mixed liquid solutions.
- Dissolve in water at point of use
- No hazardous transport requirements
- Same detection performance as liquid
- Practical for field investigators
- Long shelf life in tablet form
Ready-to-use liquid formulation supplied in spray bottles for immediate application. Ideal for laboratory use and crime scene investigations where on-site preparation is not practical.
- Ready to use — no preparation required
- Supplied in spray bottle
- Controlled, even application
- Suitable for large surface areas
- High-sensitivity chemiluminescent detection
BlueStar vs Standard Luminol
BlueStar is specifically formulated for forensic casework — offering significant advantages over standard luminol reagents used in crime scene investigations.
